How Creative Entrepreneurs Can Overcome Blogger’s Overwhelm

bloggers overwhelm

This is just going to be a super short post today. Let’s call it a mini-motivation boost going into the weekend!

I’ve read SO many articles from other bloggers about fears, lack of motivation and confusion when they first started building a blog.

All of these symptoms are a telltale sign of what we like to call the dreaded Blogger’s Overwhelm.

You may be particularly susceptible to this if you’ve been trying to grow your blog into a business and feel that extra pressure to succeed.

Trust me, I’ve had SO many moments when I question my blogging journey:
Does anyone even care what I have to say? Why bother? Do I  even know what I’m talking about? I can’t compete with other bloggers in my niche. Blah, blah, blah.

Many times, these negative thoughts start popping up when I’m stagnant, overwhelmed and unsure what to work on next to grow my blog. And when you think about it, it’s SO easy to get overwhelmed- I mean honestly, growing your blog into a business is not a walk in the park! You have to be part writer, administrator, marketer, designer, coder and SEO expert all rolled into one!

Looking at all everything a blogger needs to do in a day can make even the most confident person feel overwhelmed!

A few years ago, I started a blog that TANKED and I couldn’t figure out why. I had spent so much time on it and right out of the gate, I was determined to grow it into a business and start making some dough.

I set up Google AdSense, I signed up with Amazon to become an affiliate marketer and I started thinking about monetization ideas. I thought to myself, “build it, and they will come!“.

But 6 month’s into it, I still had no engagement and ridiculously low page views. Looking back now, it’s no wonder!

My content SUCKED.

I wasn’t writing from the heart and I had a hard time coming up with new ideas. I wasn’t thinking about what people in my situation would want to read and I wasn’t focused on building a sense of community. I realized that there really is right way and a wrong way to blog, and that I needed to buckle down and focus on building my business properly.

Overwhelm can come from SO many different places! Maybe you’re trying to focus on too much at once, or you’re comparing your blog to someone else’s who is more established than you.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed with your blog or online business, take a few minutes to try these few things:

1. Review

Chances are, a lot of you reading this are go-getters! You feel like you need to kick ass, take names and get moving! This is an incredibly important quality for bloggers and creatives to have, but if you’re not careful, you’ll head down a one way street to overwhelm! Check in with yourself every so often and ask yourself these questions:

1.  Am I still passionate about the subject I’m writing about?
2. What am I really knowledgeable about when it comes to blogging and running my business?
3. What do I need to work on today/this week/this month that will help me feel more confident?

This will help you remember your passion and remind you that you have some awesome skills! It also gives you an idea of what your next move should be  to continue learning and growing your biz.

2. Plan

This is soooooooo important! Not just making a plan but actually sticking to it! We have a tendency to like doing things we are good at and feel comfortable with, while putting off things we’re less confident about. You have to admit, your brain does a great job of keeping you comfortable and helping to reduce threats, but it can really stifle your GROWTH.

If you’ve mastered social media but you’re not able to create enough content to keep your blog fresh and exciting, you need to find strategies to help you get writing. Or maybe you’re the opposite and you LOVE writing but you struggle with self promotion and getting noticed on social media. Stop focusing on what you’re really good at and commit to learning and growing in the areas where you’re lacking some skills.

Remember, EVERYTHING can be learned, and with practice, ANYTHING can be mastered. No one is born with an inability to grow an Instagram account or do some research for a blog article.

With this in mind, let’s look at some REASONS for Blogger’s Overwhelm so we can brainstorm ideas to get of the slump.

Content creation

I will admit, this a big one for me! I always worry about creating content that is “good enough” and this fear sometimes stops me from writing anything at all! The cardinal rule of blogging is: done is better than perfect!

If you keep waiting for the perfect 3000 word article before posting anything, trust me, you’re not doing yourself any favors!

Brainstorm ideas, do some keyword research and tell yourself when you’re not in the mood to write, that you will try for 10 minutes. Only 10.

I promise if you commit to sitting down and writing for 10 minutes, the creative juices will start flowing, you’ll find your groove and you may even be able to pop out an entire blog post! If you need some help,  I wrote a blog post about about coming up with ideas for fresh content!

Ah, the ultimate goal of most serious bloggers is finding a way to earn income by doing something you love! There are SO many ways to monetize a blog that it can get overwhelming pretty quickly.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that without readers and a loyal audience, you can NOT make ANY money from blogging! Whether you’re trying to to make some money from affiliate links, selling your own product, or a pay per click like Adsense, you can’t get very far without page views, an engaged audience and fans who believe in what you’re selling.

So, BEFORE you focus on monetizing anything, build your blog first!

Focus on content creation, and developing your email list so you will have people to advertise to once you get your product going! This was a hard pill to swallow for me, but once I realized this doesn’t happen overnight, I became much more committed to building a useful and beautiful blog.

Social media

Social media can be so easy to overlook and get lost among the thousands of other things you need to do in a day. But try not to let this happen! It really doesn’t take long, I promise.

Set aside 10-15 minutes a day for each social media platform and make sure you’re 1. posting fresh content, 2. responding to and engaging with your audience and 3. finding new people to network with and following them.

Once you get a routine going, it’s super easy! And if you have a few bucks to spend, consider looking into an automation program to help you schedule posts like Tailwind and Schedugram.

Website design

Working on perfecting a website and blog graphics is literally a never-ending battle for so many bloggers! I still fall into this trap. Instead of focusing on the quality of content, sometimes I find myself daydreaming about new color schemes or starting my design on a new graphic before I even have an idea for the blog post!

Again, always keep in mind that although your website design is really important, it comes secondary to great content.

If people are visiting and fall in love with your colors but soon realize you have nothing to say, why would they ever come back?! So before going out and spending money designing a perfect site, first ask yourself if you’re proving VALUE to your visitors. You don’t need a fancy WordPress theme to do that!

Keeping up with your community and relationships

Just like social media, this is super important to do regularly! Set aside a time each day (maybe first thing before you start writing or checking out Facebook) to look at other blogger’s sites and engage. Also take time to respond to your comments from other bloggers/fans in your community.

If every day is too much, put it in your schedule once or twice a week to spend an hour looking through other blogs, finding great new content and engaging with those bloggers.

I hope these tips will help!
